His background includes work at newspapers, magazines, and digital publications ranging from small, rural weeklies to Gannett-owned dailies. He has worked as a reporter, editor, advertising director, and publisher.

In 2006, Clay was named one of the  Top 20 Under 40 by the Texas Press Association, and has earned awards from the Tennessee, Texas, South Texas, Texas Gulf Coast, Mississippi, and Kentucky Press Associations. He’s also won several awards from the Associated Press Media Editors Association and has been honored by the Associated Press itself.

He also served as the vice president of a national digital marketing and public relations agency.

His work has appeared in more than 75 magazines, and he is also a published author of short fiction.
